Your second day on the mountain starts with a fairly steep climb through the last of the rainforest up to alpine meadows dotted with giant heather. Further on, the environment changes to open heath with stunted vegetation before opening out to bleak moorland.
Today you will gain approximately 1,000m in altitude, so walk slowly in order to acclimatize properly. It is normally a 6-7-hour hike to reach Horombo Hut. Both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks can be viewed easily on the way. Dinner and an overnight stay at Horombo hut.

Horombo to Kibo Hut
A hard day’s climb to Kibo hut (4700M) covers 13 Km; 6-7 hours crossing terrain on the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Here take a chance to relax on arrival as the next stage begins shortly after midnight to ascend to the summit “Uhuru Peak” (5895m).
Kibo hut – Uhuru peak (The Summit) to Horombo hut
Wake up at midnight, and after a snack, proceed to the summit through Gilman’s point (18,640ft). It is about 5-6hours and 1-2 hours from Kibo hut to Gilman’s point and from Gilman’s point to Uhuru Peak (19,340ft) respectively. Please note you do the beginning of this climb in the dark with headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is, by far, the most difficult part of the trek. Slowly slowly, and an optimistic attitude will get you there! Thus reaching the Uhuru peak in the early morning. After your summit stays — having funny, pictures etc, descend back to the Kibo Huts, have rest, collect your things, and re-cross the saddle to the Horombo Huts for your dinner and well-deserved sleep!
